I have often visualized Jesus as the strong One who performs miracles
That morning, however, I saw His other side, His vulnerable side. Instead of seeing Him only as the great and mighty Lord, I saw Him as the weeping One. The Lover whose heart is broken because of our many sins.
Francisco, one of the children who saw the apparition of Our Lady in Fatima also saw the same Jesus. It is said that he would often withdraw in solitude and prayer to “console Jesus for the sins of the world".
He is not just the Judge who will execute justice for the whole world
He is the Good Shepherd who seeks out all who are lost.
So many times, we fear approaching Him for fear of being shamed. We feel the great burden of our sins and so we are frightened to be in His holy presence.
But if you saw how Jesus weeps, you will be able to know Him more. And you will see how much He truly loves you.
It is not a love that merely feels obliged to save this world in a generic kind of way. It is a personal, warm and affectionate kind of love that sees you as the unique person that you are. It is that love that pursues you and draws near to you, that love that drove Him to come down from heaven just to be where you are.
Yes, it is a love that suffers, and a love that is wounded. If that wasn’t the kind of love Jesus has, why suffer the horrors of the cross?
He could have watched you from afar. But He drew near you and still persists in being with you, not only in Spirit but in His whole being through the Holy Eucharist.
He is not that kind of God who merely waits for you to fall so that He could punish you
What He’s been waiting for is your attention and your change of heart so you can finally see Him and notice Him loving you.
Aren’t we all thirsting for this kind of love? This love which alone can fill the emptiness in our hearts?
Without His love we can have no rest or peace. We’d seek it in all things and in all people, but if we fail to see it in Him, we’d spend all our days seeking love where it could never be found.
A heart that aches and weeps, that is the heart of Jesus. His is a Love so Sacred that He will never force it upon anyone.
But He waits. He waits for you and for me…
For how long must we keep Him waiting?
If you saw this side of God, you will return. And you’d pray never ever to leave His side again.
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.”
- Isaiah 43:1 (NRSVCE)
I leave you with a poem I wrote while I was reflecting upon the great love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ for me. You can also watch the YouTube video I recorded for this poem.
At The Foot of the Cross
At the foot of the cross
that’s where I want to be
To gaze upon my God
with boundless love for me
To kiss His feet pierced with nails
to worship and adore
Him who was pierced by a lance
Him who was crowned with thorns
I cannot ever understand
all the reasons why
Why He must be crucified like this
why He must suffer and die.
But there at the foot of the cross
I feel His great mercy for me
Blood and water flowed from His heart
out of His great love for me.
How else can I even understand
how infinite and great is His love
if not by the cross, yes, by the cross
where all is gained when all was lost
I thank you Lord for bringing me
where alone my soul can stay
It is there alone where I can find healing
it is there alone where I can be saved!
