It’s so easy to think that what’s most beautiful should be the one that’s shared the most.
Along with this are all the positive things that can make us happy. Thing that can make us appreciate life more. Things that can heal the world and bring us peace.
But what I have noticed these days is that the negative things seem to carry a greater impact on the internet.
What gets shared more are those articles and comments that are filled with hatred, fear and sadness.
People flock to bad news more than they do with good news. Gossip spreads like fire while truth gets buried out of sight.
Why?
Why do people like to talk about the things that make us mad?
Why do so many enjoy talking about other people’s faults?
I can’t help but get this feeling that the world is suffering from overwhelming despair. And in the midst of this helplessness, we may just want to scream.
When we find others also crying out loud, we somehow get this consolation that we are not alone. Yes, not alone. At least, having some company could mean we’re not living meaningless lives.
But having angry people as friends only reinforces our anger. It convinces us that our feelings are right while we forget to look for answers that can take that anger away.
Not that anger in itself is wrong. We should all hate what is evil!
But somewhere along the way, I think we get lost. We focus so much on our hatred for evil that we forget our love for what is good.
Does it help us to wallow in our sadness so we could someday find our joy?
Is fixing our gaze in the shadows helping us to see the light?
Fight your fight. Claim your right. Make war with what is wrong. But don’t you ever forget what is right!
Spend some days thinking of the good things.
Spend some time recalling the valuable things you’re trying to defend.
Can you still remember what peace feels like? Or what a beautiful thing does to your soul?
Can you still recall hearing words that inspire and bring healing to your heart?
Think not only of evil. Think more of the good!
Write not only about the things you hate. Write more about the things you love.
If we focus more on these beautiful things, perhaps we can start to fill even the internet with love.
“Life is so full of unpredictable beauty and strange surprises. Sometimes that beauty is too much for me to handle. Do you know that feeling? When something is just too beautiful? When someone says something or writes something or plays something that moves you to the point of tears, maybe even changes you.” – Mark Oliver Everett
“Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honourable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Do the things which you learnt, received, heard, and saw in me, and the God of peace will be with you.” - Philippians 4:8-9, WEBBE
