Sometimes Grief is Like a Wave, and Healing is Like a Butterfly
It is not because things die,
That they are beautiful.
Things are beautiful
Because somehow,
A part of them lives on
And never dies…
Today, I’d like to share with you some of my most recent poems on grief, which I have included in my latest book (Of Waves and Butterflies).
When I Hold on to My Tears
Let me hold on to the pain,
For just a moment more.
Take not away the tears,
Which alone can keep me warm.
For I'd rather mourn,
Than learn to forget.
I'd rather remember,
Every hour since we've met.
For though grief pains me now,
It also keeps my joy.
Though your memory haunts me now,
It brings me closer to your soul.
Oh that I may learn,
To be stronger than my pain,
And that I may find,
A way to live again.
Not without you,
But with you —
Always with you,
Who is my all.
The Waves Are Getting Smaller
They say that grief
Is not something you get over with.
It’s not something you move on from,
Something you can live without.
Grief is a big cloud
That engulfs you
And swallows you whole…
It becomes a part
Of who you are.
So no matter how far
You think you’ve come,
It follows you.
It visits you in your dreams,
Shows its eyes
In your waking moments,
Joins you as you eat,
And sweeps over you
Like huge waves
Crashing upon the shore.
Yet for what it’s worth,
Even grief
Seems to understand.
It has seen you for who you are.
It has compassion over you,
And hides itself
From time to time.
Even grief gives you space to breathe,
It gives you time to mend,
And yes, sometimes
It allows you to forget.
You forget
Until it comes again,
Reminding you,
That it never truly goes away,
But it’s okay.
The waves are getting smaller,
The pain is something you could bear.
You no longer reside
Within your grief.
Your grief now rests
Within your heart.
When we are mourning the death of a loved one, we experience a profound sadness that nobody else seems to understand.  Many times, all we need is just a warm hand to hold us and a friend who will be there for us as we face the most difficult times we’ve ever had.Â
Let these poems be like a friend to you, revealing the deepest hurts in your heart as you strive to find some comfort in your hour of grief.
