I was browsing some Instagram posts showing beautiful illustrations of imaginary places when a question suddenly popped out of my head: Why didn’t God make this world more beautiful?
Why do we not see glowing rocks and pebbles along the road? Why can’t there be floating castles and flying unicorns in the sky? Why aren’t butterflies leaving a trail of golden dust?
If we human beings, in our limited capacity can imagine all those beautiful things, what could be the reason God didn’t make this world so much more wonderful than that?
Reflecting about these later on, I have come to realize two possible reasons:
1. Because God wants us to yearn for heaven
If God were to give us much more beautiful thing here on earth, we’d grow more attached to it. We may not longer want to see another world or another life.
God instead gave us a mind that can dream of better things and a heart that can long for things that last. God wants us to thirst for our heavenly home.
“If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.”― C.S. Lewis
2. Because God is reserving the best for last
In this life, God gives us the opportunity to create like Him. He wants us to use the things we see to make more wonderful things. To conceive the best we can with our minds and to make this world a better place with our own hands.
In the end, God is reserving the best things for us. After using our imagination and strength to the fullest, He surprises us with all of those things that exceed even our greatest dreams.
“Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear,
which didn’t enter into the heart of man,
these God has prepared for those who love him.”
