Why Were Some Christian Converts Not Directly Converted to Catholicism?
A reflection on our spiritual journey
I just watched a very inspiring conversion story from an Iranian who converted into Christianity. He used to be a Muslim, but through a miraculous set of events and realizations, he finally came to know Jesus Christ.
He isn’t alone. There are also thousands out there – Muslims, Buddhists, agnostics, and atheists who have been converted into Christianity and had themselves baptized in the faith.
But the question we Catholics may ask is this: “Why haven’t they been called directly to the Catholic faith?”
Doesn’t God want them to come to the fullness of truth?
Only God knows why He did not call all of those Christian converts directly into the Catholic Church. But we trust His wisdom that He knows the most appropriate time for revelation for every person.
While we are all called to know Him and to love Him, our journey could be very different from one another.
Some are already born into the faith. Some convert only as adults. Still, others profess the faith in their final moments in life.
Only God can see the readiness of our souls in receiving His message. He alone knows our wounds and weaknesses, our fears and our hesitations. He could foresee how we’re going to respond to Him when He calls us by this way or that.
And He avails of the most profitable way for our souls.
He can wait for our growth and healing. And because He is already in our tomorrows, we can be assured that He will be with us also as we walk towards Him every step of the way!
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’”-Matthew 20:1-7 (NRSVCE)
