Why We All Need Stories
For the reader and the writer in all of us
“The realm of fairy-story is wide and deep and high and filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, Tolkien On Fairy-stories
We all need stories. Stories that would keep us from going crazy. Stories that would help us see our lives in a whole new light.
We’re so close to the lives we live in that we often fail to see our own story. We often fail to see our worth.
We need someone else who sees us from faraway, a person who would bear witness to our daily struggles, another heart who would hear our cries in the silence of our empty rooms.
Without knowing our story, we’re like travelers without maps, not knowing where we are and where we’re going. Without stories, we drift aimlessly in the open sea, waiting for the time we could no longer stay afloat.
We need stories to bring us back when we’re lost. We need stories to tell who we are and what we have done. Stories to keep us awake. Stories to inspire us as we continue to fight for those we love.
That’s what stories are for. That’s why we read. And that’s why we write.
“Fantasy remains a human right: we make in our measure and in our derivative mode, because we are made: and not only made, but made in the image and likeness of a Maker.”― J.R.R. Tolkien, Tolkien On Fairy-stories
“History is a story written by the finger of God.” - C.S. Lewis
